Fitting/Maintenance & Break-in

Fitting:

Fig 1

Fig 2

Fig 3
Place your foot on the orthotic to make sure the arch matches your foot.

If a metatarsal pad is present, check that it is positioned just behind the ball of your foot (Figure 1).Remove the original insole from the shoes in which the orthotics will be used (if possible).

Fig. 2 Trace the shape of the original insole onto the orthotic by lining up both heels (Figure 2). If the original insole cannot be removed, use the outside of the shoe for tracing purposes.

Trim the toe area of the orthotics conservatively, as it is easier to trim them a second time than it is to send them back for a recover, if too much is removed (Figure 3).

Fig. 3 Place the orthotics in the shoes (without the original insole) and make sure that they sit flat in the shoes.

If there is curling at the edges, or the orthotics cannot sit flat in the shoe, trim the toe area again, only as necessary, to improve the fit.

Try on the shoes with the orthotics and walk for a short period of time. There should be even pressure throughout the orthotic, without any high points or ‘digging in’. It is normal to feel some pressure in the arch and from the metatarsal pads, however, there should be no pain. The slight pressure should go away in a few days (see Break-In instructions).

Break-in

First day - Wear the orthotics for up to 2 hours of standing or walking.

Second day - Wear the orthotics for 2 to 4 hours of standing or walking. It is normal to feel some fatigue in the legs and feet.

Third day - Wear the orthotics for 4 to 6 hours of standing or walking. Any fatigue should improve as your body gets used to the new positioning of your feet.

Fourth Day - Wear the orthotics for up to a full day of standing or walking.
For intense sporting activities, such as running, repeat the break-in procedure
Ex. First run - 2km
Second run - 4km
Third run - 10km

If any bruising or blistering should develop, discontinue use, and return to your clinic for follow-up.

If muscle fatigue continues or worsens, return to your clinic for follow-up.

Maintenance

If your orthotics get wet, simply remove them from your shoes, and allow them to air dry. ***DO NOT PLACE THE ORTHOTICS IN THE DRYER OR NEAR HEAT SOURCES TO DRY***

Repeated soaking of the orthotics may cause damage to the materials. Return the orthotics for repair as soon as possible.

For odour control, top covers may be wiped with a soapy cloth and allowed to air dry, or sprinkled with talc powder.
